Disappointment! (2008-07-12) Well, i got this game knowing that the graphics were infact incredible, so i was looking forward to playing it. The graphics are great, and my system can handle it. The game just feels so fake with the car's handling and steering. The car doesn't feel real at all. If you collide with a wall at full speed, you either get bounced back onto the track, or just float around for a few seconds. It is totally letdown by this.At first i found that it was more fun than when you actually get used to the game. Not realising i wasted money on this, i realised i should have gotten DiRT. By the way, there is no damage system. So cars can come out of a wreck without a scratch, which is awful, suggesting how they they spent so long making sure that all tyre tracks stay on the course, and that the mud flickers and stays on the car, and also how the tyre tracks give more grip, but had no time to make a damage system? Come on!It could have been big, but not when it turned out like this. Not even graphics can cover over the terrible gameplay and unrealistic feel.
Enjoy it for what it is (2007-11-13) This was designed from the start to be an arcade style game and not a simulation. The graphics are astounding and there's a good sense of speed, you'll need your wits about you. Successfully sliding round a 90 degree bend or U turn brings a great sense of satisfaction. As has been said before, there's no real damage; you are penalized for collisions by loss of speed and/or being spun in the wrong direction. From a fun point of view, this is great. If it were realistic, I'd be writing my car off in the first few seconds and constantly re-starting. For me, it would get the 5th star if the tracks were a bit longer, but given the level of detail (we're talking individual flowers here) I can appreciate the huge amount of artwork that must be required.
Arcade Rallying (2007-10-09) Don't buy this expecting to be able to choose tyre-tread patterns or the height of your suspension - this is an arcade title, was always intended to be, and anyone expecting otherwise hasn't done their homework. Criticising this title for these reasons is basically just not valid. This is more akin to Wipeout with mud, wheels and no weapons - you try to go as fast as hell as often as possible, and simply for that I love it. It's moderately and surprisingly difficult in places, even from the outset, but it's also pick-up and play stuff, so there's no need to get too stressed-out by it. You also don't need a monster PC to play it; I have a Core2Duo, 2GB RAM, and a 7900GTX - and I can set every detail to maximum without any slowdown. If you like relatively simple racers with a bit of graphical flair, this is worth a look - but don't expect an engineering extension course like Colin McRae's DiRT or Richard Burns Rally.
Not so good (2007-10-06) Having seen the video demo's and hearing the hype for this game I was up for parting with my money for it... now I've played it I feel really let down. The cars feel light and it's impossible to come off the track, in fact you can pretty much complete a race by only holding the accelerate button on some tracks, although you won't win. Invisible barriers bounce you back on the track. The cars don't seem to take any real damage. With the mud flying around and sticking to the car and the tracks being deformed with tyre groves you'd expect car collisions and damage to be part of it all but it's not. It's not a real rally game like Colin McRae and it's not a real all terrain no holds barred race game like Flatout 2.I'd recommend downloading and playing the playable demo before purchasing this game.
Great graphics, poor handling, savage difficulty levels... (2007-10-04) I love racing games so eagerly splashed out £34 for this one. I read the reviews on the internet, again, eagerly waiting to see the way the track floor was `updated' by the effect of the cars driving over it. My machine is high enough spec to handle this game well so I loaded it up. Yes, it looks beautiful. The music is ok, although not a patch on Outrun 2006. The scenery moves: elephants walk by in Africa, geysers spout in the mountains etc. So far so good. Where the game not only falls down by, in my opinion crashes and burns is on the handling and sense of `rubber meeting the road'. The cars slip and slide around, in fact, they FLOAT like those really old games where a plastic car was on a rod in front of the screen and only the images on the screen moved. It's AWFUL. I was shocked by the almost complete lack of feeling that you are on the road. Colin Mcrae's Dirt is superior in almost every way - graphics, handling and gritty `get out my way' car bashing. The difficulty level even on the easy levels is high although I like a challenge. Sorry SEGA, this one I should have waited for the bargain bin because it reminds me of an Acorn Electron game from the mid-80's!Best racers on the market?Colin Mcrae's DirtFlatout 2 - yes, old but GREAT fun, GREAT graphics, and brilliant gritty handling.
