Like being on a plane! (2008-05-12) I've very strangely titled ths review as like being on a plane, just because some aspects of it are exactly that! When the album starts the plane is parked on the runway and the engines go down then everything just well.. takes off. You want to close your eyes but are just forced to submit and watch, just as the album opens you can't help just just sit listen or get up and dance like a looney depending on preference! Anyway dispensing with the metaphor, I was never a fan of drum and bass or any music of that kind. I thought that it was just for a certain group of people that was until me and my friend happened to find 'Hold your Colour' on a stone wall out in the middle of nowhere that my views on that music were changed perhaps forever. After we stuck it in the CD player we didn't know what to expect but then we did get addicted to it. True some may say that its not proper drum and bass, the kind of stuff that you'd find hooded geniuses to be crafting in the basement of their dark and dingy North London flat but this album certainly is a gateway into all of that. Pendulum are so sophisticated in 'Hold your Colour' that they even manage to make Gene Wilder in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory sound good, thats in 'Through the Loop' by the way! With the reissue last year even with the success of the original issue you'd think that Pendulum would make this new version even more accessable (if you could do such a thing) stick a few alternate takes of songs etc yet the only difference is that they have changed the last few tracks with new ones. The two in question being 'Blood Sugar' and 'Axle Grinder', in the broad sense Blood Sugar is the same story as Slam only with a different synth riff but still it does have knack of getting the crowd going. Axle Grinder is true to its name and does sound reminiscent of a car crash, a little atonal and uninteresting. But to sum up, this album is a cracking good listen and I'm a self confessed bad dancer and I really did myself justice when I went to see them live, it is guaranteed to get you jumping up and down (whether you choose to admit it or not)! So if in doubt, buy buy buy! You will be pleasantly surprised!
Awesome (2008-04-10) Many people are slating this album and saying it isn't portraying true drum and bass, for me this has no consequence, i am primarily a fan of rock and easy-listening music but this album really has an edge that made me jump up and listen, the fact that it is not genre-specific drum and bass doesn't bother me in the slightest, people can classify it however they want but the only thing that matters is that it's brilliant. Slam and Tarantula are the tracks that initially caught my attention and i guess these are the more non-drum n bass tracks on the album, however, after repeated listens the tracks that really stand out now are the terminal and through the loop, firstly the terminal is a pure drum n bass tune which not even the most hardened DnB fan could surely complain about, secondly through the loop is a masterpiece, sampling gene wilder was inspirational and really gives this trach a rare quality. Overall a fantastic album that will have your head spinning, if 2008's follow up 'in silico' even comes close to this we are in for a real treat.
Overrated for sure! (2008-01-31) Being a purist who has seen every DJ on the set also having lived with a very talented DJ I can honestly say this is overrated. It is a pop crossover attempt with more emphasis on creating profitising music for the masses than creating solid D+B. Ask anyone who is less than thirty if they like drum and bass and you will invariably get the answer; 'I love pendulum'. And to compare them to the mighty Prodigy is laughable! However I have given them 3 stars on the merit of their instrumental gigs which few artists have the courage/talent to pull off, and the fact that they are actively getting more people into D+B. If you are getting into drum and bass buy anything on true playaz ot hospital!
Not sure about this version, but love the original release!!!!!! (2008-01-04) I didn't realise that this had been reissued, but if the other reviews here are right about the gaps etc then avoid and go for the orginial. I was lucky enough to pick up a copy for 3 quid in HMV a couple of years ago, having only heard Slam, and was blown away! The first half of the album is chockablock with amazing riffs and hooks which will suck you in even if you're not a d'n'b fan (I'm only a casual listener). Every track makes you want to move. I was training for a half marathon when I bought it and I swear it made me run a lot faster, cos the music gets your adrenalin pumping like nothing else!! The second half is good for a cooldown or a slower jog, and is decent but not as good in my opinion. This album is still a favourite on my MP3 player, so I encourage you to get hold of it (not the reissue!) as soon as you can!Ladies and gentlemen, fasten your seatbelts....
Pendulum - Hold Your Colour (2007-12-27) A few years back i got into drum and bass, the likes of dillinja, dj hype, drumsound & smith, then i heard Pendulum. The 'Hold Your Colour' album was the first of their music that i heard, and now in my opinion the most creative and artistic DnB album ever, maybe even the best of any genre. From start to finish there is ripping bass, mental synths, smashing drums, cool melodies and soothing vocals:Prelude & Slam - Possibly the best intro and build up to a song ever, the dialogue, the orchestra, the epic hiphop beat....and then, Slam! No raver could ever resist this tune. 10/10Plasticworld - A chilled follow up to a hectic start with nice vocals and a punchy synth solo to cap it off. 8/10Fasten Your Seatbelts - Another club banger! Even better performed live aswell. Another suprising build up to a sick drop. 9/10Through the loop - A hard, dark DnB tune with loud drums. Some eery but epic dialogue which they do so well adds to the madness, but not a very 'musically respectable' tune. 7/10Sounds of Life - A soothing follow up to the previous track, this song uses the voice of Jasmine Yee to effect with some floaty, happy melodies. However, not the best of tracks to listen to if you're up for some DnB. 6/10Girl in the Fire - Best tune on the album if you don't count Slam, showing that there is clearly some musical talent there with bongo drums, guitar riffs, and sax and 'i-have-no-idea-what' solos, along with a good hard bass riff. Also what i like about this tune is that it bends from the regular pattern of drum and bass, which is needed for boredom's sakes and which is why more people dont listen to DnB! 10/10Tarantula - I don't really like this tune that much anymore, but when i first heard it i went mental. The bass is a bit bland but sick vocals from some legend rasta Spyda (appears on Fresh's track 'Steam' - sick choooon!) 8/10Out Here - A solid tune for what it is, slow drum and bass. Good, chilled out start then with some kickin bass and wierd-soundin vocals. 7/10Hold Your Colour - What a tune, up there with Slam and Girl in the Fire. Sick vocals, old skool bass riff, mad vocal effects ahhh i love it. 10/10The Terminal - This shows Pendulum's range, Hold Your Colour, an actual song with lyrics and structure, to an absolutely stomping standard DnB tune. Wierd-soundin vocals again with heeeeeaaaavy bass and some trumpets if you will. Smashing. 10/10Streamline - Uhhhh the worst tune on the album. I dont really like it but i can see that Pendulum were just experimenting with Rob Swire's vocals for future tunes. Still it's awwwright i guess. 5/10Another Planet - I never really liked this tune until i heard them play it live because their performance of it was incredible. A good, subtly changing riff with some peculiar dialogue. 8/10Still Grey - A relaxing warm down to the album. Not an amazing tune but it does its job with chilled synths and faded vocals. I am surprised that Pendulum decided with a soft tune to end the album rather than a stomper or an actual song (Sounds of Life, Hold Your Colour) 7/10So there it is, possibly the best album ever. However, Pendulum's record label decided to violate the perfection of this album with another version of it, replacing the last 2 tracks with Blood Sugar and Axle Grinder, which in fairness, are good tunes....well Blood Sugar is amazing....but they are standard format DnB tunes with little creativity or imagination. A bad decision i feel. Hopefully the coming album make up for that.
