Synopsis

In this thriller from director Stephen Hopkins (LOST IN SPACE, UNDER SUSPICION), Oscar winner Hilary Swank is Katherine Winter, a college professor who refutes mysteries and so-called miracles with scientific evidence. When science teacher Doug Blackwell (David Morrisey) invites Katherine and her former teaching assistant/current colleague, Ben (Idris Elba), to his hometown of Haven, Louisiana, to investigate a river whose water has turned blood-red following the mysterious death of a local boy, the cynical professor is forced to find her own faith. The river of blood is just the first in a series of strange occurrences in Haven. It seems that each of the 10 plagues from Exodus is being manifested, in order. The citizens of this Bible Belt town are convinced that 12-year-old Loren McConnell (AnnaSophia Robb) is responsible for her brother’s death and for the strange events. Soon, Katherine finds herself questioning everything as memories from her past suddenly infiltrate the present in her search for the truth. The Deep South setting is both beautiful and creepy--particularly Doug’s classic antebellum mansion, and the swamps where the McConnell family lives. Swank is reliably solid as Katherine, a woman of faith who lost everything important to her and turned to science for answers. Young AnnaSophia Robb, a young actress to watch, has a captivating screen presence. Brits David Morrissey and Idris Elba (THE WIRE) round out the main characters, with Morrissey a convincing Southern gentleman and Elba a man who overcame his tough life on the streets to become a professor. Stephen Rea also appears as Father Costigan, a link to Katherine’s sad past.

Reimaginging of Rosemarie's Baby? (2008-08-30)

This is a kind of reimagining of Rosemarie's baby, a scientist who spends her time debunking miracles or inexplicably odd environmental disasters is sent to a small town which is experiencing plagues of the biblical variety. There are revelations about the scientist, why she has lost her faith, the town, they arent what they seem, and a child who is scapegoated by the townspeople as the source of the trouble. While its not a total surprise (unless you where surprised by "twists" like that in The Sixth Sense) there is an entertaining "twist" just at the finish of the story, which leaves a kind of cliff hanger and talking point but doesnt leave you wondering what was going on or leaves you feeling like the movie's some how incomplete. Worth renting, I dont know that its particularly worth owning, its not a very cerebrally challenging movie, doesnt take a lot of thinking about and its more of an actioner or thriller than the suspenseful Rosemarie's baby and there isnt a lot of rewatch value with this movie.
Just awful! (2008-08-05)

This film is awful. I bought it to take me over the £15 mark so I could get free delivery and even at just £3 it is a rip off! I thought it might be half decent, but it is a film full of cliches. Badly acted, with a threadbare predictable plot, even the special effects are ridiculous. And it is not even scary one little bit. Oh, and we've seen the pubescent girl with blood running down her legs way before (Carrie), and the 'redneck' spooky little American town, and the lead character who is fighting her own loss of faith due to a terrible personal tragedy (and without wishing to give anything away, why wasn't she murdered too?).If you want something scary, original and gripping don't look here. I'm starting to wonder if this is bad intentionally!
Brilliant Film (2008-06-27)

This film is fantastic - it has so many twists and turns in it that you will never be able to predict the ending! Scary but not bone chilling, it has a wierd and wonderful plot that will have you on the edge of your seat throughout!
solid and enjoyable (2008-06-06)

3 Stars (2008-05-30)

Not the best film I've ever seen but by no means the worse. Hilary Swanks pulls out a good performance, effects at the end not that great (actually quite laughable) but if you enjoyed Seventh Sign then you'll enjoy this.
