Synopsis

Animation master Gabor Csupo directs his first live-action film in this adaptation of the novel 'The Bridge to Terabithia' by Katherine Paterson, whose son David co-wrote the screenplay and serves as a producer. Jess (Josh Hutcherson) is misunderstood. Despite Jess' talents as an artist, the school bullies pick on him, his father (Robert Patrick) belittles his dreams, and his four sisters invade his space in the family's cramped house. Jess' bleak world changes when Leslie (AnnaSophia Robb) moves into the house next door. Bright, creative and outspoken, Leslie also finds herself an outsider in their school. Soon the two are thick as thieves, spending their after school hours exploring the woods beyond their backyards and on the others side of a creek, which Leslie deems the kingdom of Terabithia. Here, they create their own magical world, complete with a Dark Master and his minions, dragonfly soldiers, giant trolls and a treehouse fortress. In Terabithia, the two friends let their imaginations run wild and control their destiny, far away from school bullies and the pressures of adolescence. Hutcherson and Robb are well cast as Jess and Leslie in this coming-of-age tale. Hutcherson handles both the melancholy intensity and unbridled joy of his character beautifully, and Robb's smile and charisma are infectious. Zooey Deschanel also stars as Miss Edmunds, the music teacher who befriends Jess. Terabithia and its creatures are created by WETA Digital LTD, the same company that did the effects for the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy and KING KONG.

Brilliant, especially if you've seen the misleading trailer (2008-06-26)

I too first saw the trailer that made me think of an Action/Adventure movie. I honestly loved that because you went in anticipating something, and were totally unprepared for what followed. That's when you enjoy the movie the best.In order to recommend the movie to others, I simply say it's a "good movie"; and if I have to give a plot, then I say "it's a good movie about teenager hardships at school and the fantacy world they create".After that people are reluctant to watch it, but I get them to promise that they'll watch at least 15 minutes - at by then they're not even going to the bathroom - Oh and they LOVE IT! (The movie, not holding their bladder)
great family film (2008-06-06)

Not sure what it is... (2008-06-02)

...that's the main problem here. My wife and I watched it, expecting something quite different. It's a kids film, but as has been said, young teens probably. The story is quite a nice one, but you are expecting a tragedy of some sorts to arrive, and it does. A nice story nonetheless, but the Terabithia parts are too infrequent, as has been said elsewhere. Not a "bad" film, per se, but not our cup of tea. There are better films of this ilk out there.
Not a fantasy but harsh reality - the advert is misrepresentative (2008-05-23)

This is so difficult to review properly without giving away plot details but I'll do my best. This may be classified as a children's "coming of age" film and it may involve fantastical creatures born out of the minds of the two young protagonists. This film is not, however, one that is feather light nor is it, as it was promoted, something akin to Narnia or the Harry Potter films. It involves the harsh realities of life and isn't afraid to meet them head on which is why it is certificate PG - it will upset you in places even if you're an adult. It deals realistically and sensitively with issues of bullying, poverty, death, responsibility, family and, without giving too much away, it never, ever pulls its punches. Very small children may find it too upsetting although much is dealt with in ways that youngsters might understand especially with an adult who could explain things further after the film ends. This film is emotional without being mawkish. The two young actors in the main roles are perfectly cast and able to exhibit a whole range of difficult and complex emotions. If you're buying this for children without having either seen it previously or having read the book on which it's based, it's probably best to watch it before they see it to gauge if they'll be able to deal with the subject matter. It's a well made and thoughtful film that certainly provoked some all nighter conversations in my household. Recommended although please be aware it may not be the happy ever after you're expecting. Watch but have tissues ready for the tears.
A heartful imaginative drama with a spark of fantasy (2008-05-19)

A family movie that delves into the imaginative minds of children. It's not a bad movie, a bit predicatable in places, though it'll have you laughing at places.Surprisingly it has a number of moral elements of an adult kind embedded in. Bullying is one such topic that is covered, another was guilt, infatuation, responsibility and to my surprise for a Disney movie - was death (but not the usual animated kind) which envelops the movie in a sad cloud. It's a sweet movie, light in essence with some cool Special FX, definitely not a CGI extravaganza but more of a heartful drama with some added fantasy thrown in.Good family movie that will have you laughing and possibly crying rolled into one.
