Description
'Washington Square Serenade' is the twelfth studio album from country singer/songwriter Steve Earle. Recorded at the legendary Electric Lady studios with Dust Brother John King (Beck, Beastie Boys), the album sees Earle take inspiration from New York City's diverse community, while also drawing on more personal experiences. The album also includes guest vocals from Earle's wife Allison Moorer and Brazilian outfit Forro In The Dark.

Wide eyed country boy in the big city? (2008-04-01) 'washington square serenade' represents change on all fronts for Earle. There's a change in mood from the last few intensely political releases. This is a more personal album, reflecting his own life, a move to the big city, married life, more settled, more satisfied. Yet Earle has always been a liberal artist favoured by urban americana fans, rather than heartlands country. Musically there are changes too: electronic beats, world music. From Steve Earle, Mister Organic, Mister American Roots. Who'd have thought? Yet this too reflects Earle's move to New York, as kick off song 'Tennessee Blues' waves "Goodbye Guitar Town", in 'Down Here Below' a NY celebrity hawk whose position at the top of the food chain serves as a metaphor for the city's lords of the universe, contrasts with the lot of ordinary folk. But in part he also speaks for Earle: "He looks up and down on Fifth Avenue and says "God I love this town". The programmed beats and urban ambience is most fully integrated on 'Satellite Radio' and perhaps surprisingly sounds completely natural for Earle. Which cannot be said for the world music tourism of 'City of Immigrants', perhaps the album's weakest track. 'Sparkle and Shine' celebrates the new love of Earle's life, as, less successfully, does the gloopy duet 'Days Aren't Long Enough'. The middle section of the album, tracks six to ten, stands out prinicipally because these songs are just what we expect from Earle, and could find a home on any of his other albums. The album closes with a strong cover of Tom Waits' 'Way Down In The Hole'that pulls things back on track at the last. Recorded as the theme music for acclaimed US tv series 'The Wire', yet to screen on a mainstream UK channel, now the fifth version of the song so recorded, they can all be previewed at Wikipedia. A refreshing return from the polemics of the past few years, and an enjoyable listen.
OK, but lacks a bit of 'edge' (2008-02-06) I have almost everything that Steve Earle has done, and regard him as the finest songwriter currently working. When this album became available I bought it straight away. Steve has moved from Nashville to New York, along with wife Allison Moorer. He seems more content and rather less driven than he was and that is reflected in the songs on this album. Perhaps living in a liberal and tolerant city has taken some of the steel from his lyrics and the cutting edge from his tunes. After the long wait following 'The Revolution Starts Now' I was a little disappointed with the mellower music. It is, however, a very pleasant album, with well crafted songs.
Steve's New Biggest Fan!! (2008-01-09) I own a couple of Steve Earle albums and would say I was a fan. Upon hearing this new album my opinion has rocketed. The thing that impresses me most are the lyrics, especially City Of Immigrants. Other standout tracks include Down Here Below, Come Back To Me and Steve's Hammer. I have since purchased tickets to see Steve in concert next month, and disguised it as a birthday present for my dad, as he is not aware how much a fan I have become, which is all down to this brilliant album.
Home Sweet Home (2007-10-26) This is a fantastic album. Steve Earle writes and sings from the heart. The album is the best he's made for many a year. All the songs are strong and convey emotion and a sense of peace with the world. It rocks!
About Time This Boy Got His Dues!! (2007-10-05) I have been a long. long fan of Steve Earle way back when I was at collage, and his latest CD hits the mark (as many of his last CD's) as always. His tunes and strories around NY on his latest output still sound powerful as always. This is my first write up on a artist on a review and I cannot say how much this man should be up the with the best of them. The CD will be played many times into the night and long may him run...BUY IT!!.
