OMD - The Band That Sold Its Soul (2008-06-01) I watched this DVD with my (long suffering) wife who is not an OMD fan. Apart from the obvious questions (What's with that bloody organ in all their songs?) she managed to sit through the whole thing. Praise indeed. For me you can keep the second half, but oh, the first! Architecture & Morality is a fine, fine album, beautifully, soulfully and sublimely brought to life by a band that recognises the value of that which they had. Desolate, melancholic soundscapes sweep out, augmented by clever imagery clearly chosen to dovetail with the music. Is the video editing trite? Yes. And the sound could be better. And what is with those bored looking audience members? (Possibly something to do with the 40+ demographic of the average OMD fan?)But in the end this is a great DVD. The passion and clear enjoyment of the band is infectious, the performances near perfect and a time warp back to 1982 when a 14 year old kid heard the music for the first time and knew exactly what they meant.
best omd presentation since the dazzle ships 1983 tour (2008-05-20) the classic omd line-up reformed in 2007 and hit the road with a fantastic live presentation of architecture & morality (perhaps the bands greatest album?) plus a greatest hits package. any of you who attended these concerts will know what a special live act omd are. the band have lost none of their onstage brilliance. does this dvd capture that brilliance? yes ..... just. first off, the sound. some have been commenting on what they describe as a poor dts mix. well, i've listend to the dts and dolby digital 5.1 mixes and the sound is tops on both (dts being the better sounding). i didn't experience any "drop-outs". as for the vocals being too loud - it's subjective and i disagree. those of you who feel the vocals are too prominent in the mix can take down the centre channel volume. that's the flexability of multi-channel.as for the pictures - one can get a strong flavour of the great stage set and the band's commanding of it. the visuals on the large screens look spectacular and compliment the music perfectly (would loved to have had a fixed wide shot in the dvd extras "angle" function). frontman andy mccluskey's driving gusto and enthusiasm easily shine through. given the constraints of budget and venue the camera work is generally good and the direction fine. my understanding is that the footage was filmed over two nights on a tight budget. given that, the final cut is remarkable. my only gripes are some poor and unimaginative hand-held shots of the audience and the band onstage.fans and newbies should buy this dvd. for those who attended the concerts in 2007 - this is a must have memento. for everyone else this is an ace primer to go and see the band live. sure, the omd show looks fab on dvd but the band are so, so, so much better in front of you, on stage.
Low budget DVD (2008-04-30) I love OMD and have been waiting for this DVD for months. I am fairly disappointed that the band have used what seems to be an amateur production crew. The editing is dire, (cuts from scene to scene to scene way to quickly) the DTS sound is a joke, I played it through my high end system and found the sound fades in and out and it is quite hissy at high volume. There was so much potential lost here. The images in the background would have been an excellent extra.I suppose it was created for the typical mr average who has an off the shelf system where it probably sounds ok.Its still a worthwhile purchase, and I would buy it again. But they could have tried a little harder.
Great concert. Shame about the DVD. (2008-04-30) I was really looking forward to this DVD. Sadly it comes as a disappointment. My main criticism is that it fails to effectively capture the fantastic imagery that OMD invested very heavily in. It was really impressive on the night to see these visuals projected on a huge screen working with the music. Unfortunately, the producers of this DVD choose to impress us with their sweeping camera movement, PAN shots and Zooms. The editing doesn't help either. Few shots last any longer than 3 seconds, which is incredibly frustrating. No sooner do we cut to a lovely wide shot of the stage with all this wonderful imagery that we cut back to a close up of a hand or a face. And what is all the nonsense about in showing Andy McCluskey dancing in slow motion? The quality of the audio is also poor in places. You can just about get away with it on a standard TV, but if you are playing this through a decent sound system you will notice some huge drop off in sound from time to time. It's worth getting this DVD just to see OMD perform Architecture and Morality. But be warned, this video makes very little attempt to capture the visual brilliance of the concert, hence the rating. What a wasted opportunity.
OMD on fire but sound a problem (2008-04-30) Nothing wrong with the performance or the song choices on this. The band throw everything at this comeback gig and don't disappoint. This DVD and specifically the sound quality however leaves a lot to be desired.Having tried it on three players now the same drops in sound are present each time. The start of Tesla Girls has become un-listenable for me.Whoever mastered this has made a huge mistake. Often Andy's vocal is too high in the mix and given the energetic nature of an OMD gig we are not listening for a note perfect vocal performance yet the person who mastered this seams to think that is most important. What we are left with is the sounds of an out of breath McClusky that would sound right with the full force of drums and synth backing him but without their impact we are left worrying Andy has lost the ability to ever sing the right note again. In short it is painful to hear at times.Other instruments sound varies across the tracks (notably Mal's drums) and what was going on with the bass in Enola Gay is anyones guess. The crowd noise is pitifully mixed in with the sound clearly moving from the mixing desk feed to the sounds being picked up from the stage without any blending. Some of the camera work is suspect to say the least as well with some strange dull shots passing over the stage and shots of people in the crowd who are not dancing - Why show them?I was at this gig and I sure don't remember it being like this. This DVD does not do it justice even though the band are on top of their game here.
