Manufacturer's Description

Suffer with aches and pains?

The Morphy Richards Magnetic Heat Pad is designed to help relieve a broad range of aches and pains.

The controller for the heat pad has four heat levels so that you have the flexibility of changing the temperature output for extra comfort and targeted pain relief.  After 90 minutes the temperature of the heat pad will automatically reduce to <50°c and after three hours will switch itself off for safety confidence.

Why is the Magnetic Heat Pad such a useful Pain Relief Product?

Magnetic Heat
Magnetic therapy is a complementary way to enhance the relief of pain.  The magnets themselves do not heal – they create an environment in the body that helps speed up the natural healing process by removing inflammation and restoring circulation.  It is believed this is achieved when the blood stream and nerves are stimulated as the blood passes through the magnetic field.

Magnetic heat reduces the symptoms of arthritis, rheumatism, inflammation, injury, they:

Improve circulation Enhances the ability of the body to remove toxins naturally Increases cellular oxygen Reduces fluid retention Fights infection Supports biological healing

Heat therapy

Heat Therapy
Heat is generally used for chronic injuries or injuries that have no inflammation. Sore, stiff, nagging muscle or joint pain is ideal for the use of heat therapy. Athletes with chronic pain or injuries may use heat therapy before exercise to increase the elasticity of joint connective tissues and to stimulate blood flow. Heat can also help relax tight or spasmed muscles. Do not apply heat after exercise.

What does heat do?
Heat therapy dilates the blood vessels of the muscles. This process increases the flow of oxygen and nutrients to the muscles, helping to heal the damaged tissue.
Heat stimulates the sensory receptors in the skin, which means that applying heat will decrease transmissions of pain signals to the brain and partially relieve the discomfort.
Heat application facilitates stretching the soft tissues, including muscles, connective tissue, and adhesions. Consequently, with heat therapy, there will be a decrease in stiffness as well as injury, with an increase in flexibility and overall feeling of comfort.

When should I use heat?
Use heat for stiff muscles and joints when you are trying to make them more limber. Do not use heat in the first few days after an injury or while your injury has any swelling because heat increases blood flow and can worsen swelling.

What is heat therapy used for?
Heat can reduce muscle spasms, reduce joint stiffness, and make soft tissue more limber. Heat can be used to help loosen tight muscles and joints during a warm-up period before exercise. For example, you may put moist hot packs on tight leg muscles before running or on your shoulder before throwing, or on tight neck or back muscles.

How should I use heat?
Use it for 15 to 20 minutes or longer if recommended by your health care provider. If the heat pack causes an increase in your symptoms, stop using it until you have seen you healthcare provider. You should also see a healthcare provider if pain persists for longer than 72 hours after an injury.

Can there be any harmful effects from heat therapy?
Because heat increases circulation and raises skin temperature you should not apply heat to acute injuries or injuries that show signs of inflammation,  rheumatoid arthritis, Raynaud's Syndrome, paralysis, areas of impaired sensation (numbness) Do not use heat  on blisters or open cuts or sores. Heat increases the blood flow to an injury and can worsen swelling. Heat packs that are too hot or left in place too long may cause burns.

Does what it is meant for (2008-02-15)

Ignore the previous review. They must have bought it thinking it was some sort of pad to mould to your body. This is a heat pad that you put behind your back whilst sitting or you can lay down on it. It is not something that you tuck into your clothing or mould to your body. It works very well and gets very hot. The previous reviewer must want it so hot that it takes your skin off! All in all its been a brilliant buy, and I agree with the first reviewer.
too many design faults (2008-01-22)

Things I did not like- the pad just does not get hot enough (its rated at just under 60w). The fleece covering acts like insulation and so to get the max heat out, you have to remove it.- it takes a very long time to get warm- there is a certain degree of stiffness. Combined with the size, it is difficult to position the pad over any area of the body and then to ensure that the pad stays there.- to feel the heat the pad MUST BE FLUSH against the skin. If there is any air in between, you will not feel enough heat. In practice the pad always moved away from the skin and so one just ends up getting frustrated.- the side of the pad with the magnets is significantly cooler. - the shape of the pad means that the pad is very hard to position over the lower neck, shoulders and upper back. Things I liked:+ nothing I'm afraid.RecommendationStick to a traditional hot water bottle. Use a wool water bottle "pillow case" and this keeps the heat a lot longer, distributes the intense heat in a moderated and skin friendly fashion. Plus the case and the bottle are cheaper.
Great value for money (2008-01-15)

I have just purchased 2 of these heat pads from Amazon as they are excellent value for money. Morphy Richards offer a 2 year warranty which is great and at £13.99 you can't go wrong. They are very easy to use. Just unpack, plug in, place behind your back and set the dial to the amount of heat that you require. I found that it heats up really quickly to the required temperature. Some people have reported that the pads do not get very warm, all I can say is that their pad must have been faulty as I have ordered 2 and both work very well indeed. If you are looking for a heat pad at a good price then you really can't go wrong with this one, I would have given it 5 stars if it had been flexible enough to shape around my shoulders but as a back heat pad it is spot on.
