I don't need multi-currency support. Yet. But why on earth would they remove it? Their website does say it will be re-introduced soon, but they told me in a 'chat' that they had no date.As for the vat calculation problems that others have spelled out so clearly, I could barely get them to acknowledge that there had ever been a problem.Actually, my 'chat' session (which I suspect was with India, judging by the names) was enough to put me off Intuit for life. I went round in circles and got little sense out of them. It might be helpful to others if I recount some of it verbatim. From this you will learn that the vat errors are imagined or your own fault. In reply to my initial query about vat calculation errors:"When a file is upgraded from a lower version to the latest 2008 it would create huge figures for vat. This is because vat is handled and setup in a different way as compared to previous versions. Once you register your product, you are entitled for a 30 day support plan where all your issues would be sorted without any charge. We also have FAQs on our website quickbooks.co.uk. We have corrected vat related issue after upgrade for most of our customers."I love the glib "all your issues would be sorted without any charge"! I suggested he take a look at the reviews on Amazon and got:"Kindly do not show me any sites or reviews."Huh?! Then I asked when multi-currency support was going to be reinstated and he told me:"Multicurrency is not available now.We have no information about it. Once available it would be informed to all the customers and also posted on our website."When pressed on vat calculation errors:"Users who are not using quickbooks would be creating a new company in quickbooks and would not be upgrading. For them this issue is not applicable. Our website has a list of professional advisors and accounts, they are using quickbooks 2008."It was a much longer dialogue than that, but I was getting nowhere, so gave up. Then I read Sam Woodward's review, so went back to Intuit to challenge the bit about vat errors not being an issue for new users. I got someone with a different Indian name and asked if the vat bugs had been fixed. His reply:"Yes. You will not find any issues when you start using Quickbooks."When I pressed him:"If you have not used Quickbooks earlier than you will not face any issues with Quickbooks 2008 with VAT."I asked why other users were reporting problems and he explained:"Because that were using Quickbooks earlier versions and they tracked their VAT in the wrong way in the older version and after upgrading those errors are now showing up in Quickbooks 2008."I pointed out that Sam had written his report only 19 days ago and he was a first-time user. His response was:"So what, he may have not used Quickbooks the correct way."There you have it, people. Either you're imagining those vat problems or they're your fault! As a parting shot, he reminded me:"Also you get a 30 days money back policy with Quickbooks so if you are not satisfied, please feel free to return the product."So, it's ok if I spend half my life for a month checking out the problems that others reported long ago, because I can always get my money back? I don't think so, Intuit. Don't expect me to be a returning customer. Not that they'll be reading this, apparently.
Expensive and virtually useless (2008-10-08)

For those that have used QuickBooks before you may be bemused to hear that this new 2008 (pro) edition does not support multi currency and cannot properly calculate VAT. For those that wish to incorporate multi currency, it simply can't be done without starting all over again with a new single currency file. Existing company files that employ it can't be upgraded. In fact your only real option to use multi currency is to continue using the older 2006 edition. As for VAT calculations, it's inexcusable and baffling why Intuit could not solve this problem before the software was released. As for the user interface its very smooth and easy to use. Navigation from each section (suppliers, creditors etc) is easy and organised well. However, for the price, I cannot see how this accounting software could be of use to anyone considering the glaring omissions pointed out above. I would suggest investigating cheaper accounting software's on the market (Microsoft, MYOB) as many do what QuickBooks has failed to.

No support for multicurrency and it can't calculate VAT correctly, the latter being inexcusable. Stick with 2005 and 2006, which were very good packages. I really don't know what Intuit are doing here but it can't be good for business!

I'm going to have to be a sheep here. But a piece of accounting software that can't calculate VAT for such a high price doesn't deserve praise. It's a shame though because the underlying program is of high calibre and attractive to use. Intuit's QuickBooks series is undoubtedly the Rolls Royce of them all with a status, look and experience comparable to MS Office in the general computing world. There are a vast array of functions. But, that said, if a supercomputer couldn't work out what 1+1 is, all that glory seems inconsequential. And it's a particular nuisance to businesses who rely on this as the heart of their critical money handling needs. In fact it would be a nuisance even if this software was free - as was for me.Hopefully Intuit will address this glaring problem in it's next release. For now though, it just cannot be recommended. I suspect the fault is that the series has rested on it's laurels after being heaped with praise so many times before.

Having got this software free through the Amazon Vine program I must admit I feel a bit guilty giving it a low rating, but I must respect the views of the professional people who've already reviewed this product especially as they obviously have a lot more experience with it than I do, this being the first time I've used it.The very fact it can't even calculate VAT properly probably does deserve one star (and from the sounds of it the customer service, which I haven't used, possibly does also), but the fact that at the moment my small business runs under the VAT threshold means that I don't have to submit VAT returns so I'm sure I'll be able to make use of this program for some things I need, if not all, so for that reason I'll up the rating slightly.
