New Versions somehow disappoint (2008-07-21)

I love the Steve Miller Band, so much so that a whole holiday was booked around seeing them live on the 'Last Call' tour in 1999. As the previous reviewer mentioned these songs are indeed 'new' 2007 versions and when you are so familiar with, and just love, the originals it's somehow hard to take. Different keys and tempos plus a rap section in Fly Like an Eagle for me make this an unenjoyable listen. The 2005 concert issued as a bonus disc with the 30th Anniversary edition of Fly Like an Eagle is much better with, at 22, a couple more tracks. Nice bonus DVD though plus a CD of a dozen of those original hits.Please don't let this personal review put you off listening to the Steve Miller Band - that concert back in 99 I will remember forever.

The Joker is back (2008-07-10)

After some years hiatus and after some back surgery, Steve Miller (aka the space cowboy aka the gangster of love) is back in topform. As evidenced by this fine, well-produced DVD.Steve started his career as a young blues musician, later he delved into the psychedelia of his time, with brilliant albums like "Brave New World", before he found an enduring hitformula in the 70s with relatively simple, catchy tunes like "The Joker" and "Abracadabra".Here we get a mixture of it all, some blues classics like "Crossroads", a hint of the 60s and the spirit of jamming, and of course a healthy dose of pristine hits.Steve's guitar and voice is still smooth and captivating, the band that feautures old stallwart Norton Buffalo (Voc,hca) is tight and highly competent. In fact Miller's songs and music has never sounded better than on these 2007 versions.It starts off with a 15 min. version of "Fly Like An Eagle", even comprising a rap-section(!) and then just keep soaring from there.Includes a bonus-DVD where renowned writer Joel Selvin interviews Steve about his bluesroots while they drive around Chicago and a live-CD.All in all a strong comeback from an often somewhat underrated artist.
