Better than the real thing (2008-09-15)

One of the fun things for me about the Transatlantic Sessions was that it introduced me to artists I hadn't known before or knew litte about. Subsequently I have bought CDs by some of those artists. And I've not enjoyed the "official" product as much as I've enjoyed the performances on this DVD. The performances here are so vivid and vital, and the musicianship is so excellent that the originals get surpassed by some distance. In fact when you consider the numbers here, what Douglas, Bain and Co have achieved is near miraculous: Two weeks, about high quality tracks.

Having seen a few bits and pieces of the shows "Transatlantic seesions" on RTE television last year I decided to see whether it was available on DVD and a friend of mine told me that he got the 2 cd set.I tried three music shops in Cork and the response was "never heard of it" and "I'll check our system" ".sorry We don't stock it"So,only one thing to do, AMAZON.I ordered it from Amazon, and three days later my wife rang me at work telling me "your package has arrived".So that night out to my den with a bottle of chilled white wine and 4 hours later I found it hard to leave one of the best musical shows I have ever watched and listened to.It is 'nt often I'm stuck for words but this is just beautiful,Irish,English,Scottish and American musicians and singers get together in an an old farmhouse in Scotland with the snow falling outside to entertain us for us with their pure soulful music.I've seen and heard most of them individually here in Ireland, but together even now as I write this piece, they are AWESOME.The production, the camera work, sound quality, the banter and love of their craft make this one of my all time favourite concert albums. My friend begged me to see the Sessions in Glasgow a few weeks ago but I being an idiot decided work was more important!! Now for the third time I watch Eddi Reader sing "Aye Wauken-O",It's only one of my favourite songs on the set. Finally, If only the first sessions was available my musical life would be complete. Thanks to Amazon for their prompt delivery. Michael O'Hanlon.
At Last !! The DVD (2008-02-09)

As a huge fan of The Sessions" ever since I happened upon the first series all those years ago, we've finally got this latest series on DVD. And it's beautifully produced as well. Another great mix of traditional ballads, jigs and reels, and more contemporary songs and tunes, performed by some of the most talented and inspirational musicians you're ever going to see crammed into one room. Aly Bain and Jerry Douglas, as usual are the musical directors, although I have the impression these guys would need the minimum of direction. And everyone seems to be having FUN !!!There's so many high spots on these two discs - Tim O'Brien for example I'd almost never heard of until now. Great voice, tremendous songwriter, and plays wonderful guitar, fiddle, mandolin, and I think that may be him playing the whistle on one track as well(don't you just hate him!) And Joan Osborne again I knew very little about, but listen to her singing "St.Teresa" and "Please Don't Tell Me How the Story Ends". What a fantastic voice, and she really knows how to put a song over. My spine's tingling even now.And the little solo that Jerry Douglas drops into "Brother Wind" is, even for him, ridiculously fast without being flash (almost). There's so many great singers and players on this - There's no weak link -I could be here for hours singing their praises, but skip that - I really don't see how anyone with a real interest in any kind of music could be disappointed with this. Look on the BBC Scotland website and look at the number of people who have contributed their thoughts and said that even though they have't previously listened to this kind of music, they've been captivated by it.And the Transatlantic Sessions show I saw @ the Royal Concert hall in Glasgow last week-end was "Pure Dead Brilliant". Buy this ~ sit back ~ and enjoy! And then hope someone will actually get round to issuing the previous series on DVD

I only caught the last two episodes of this amazing TV series, so I searched high and low, hoping there would be a DVD released. To say I am pleased with this would be a gross understatement, beautiful haunting songs peformed sensitively by real musicians, from the brilliant Aly Bainand Dobro master Jerry Douglas, to the wonderfull voices of Cara Dillon and Julie Foulis. Buy it you will not be dissapointed. How about releasing a DVD of Vol 2 and 3
