Photo quality could be slightly better, but it's a great little box of tricks (2008-10-11)

I'm not a professional, I'm very much a casual 'point and click' photographer, I just want something that takes the best possible quality photos with the minimum of effort. And I have to say this camera ticks all the boxes. It has a huge feature-set and can take photos in almost any kind of environment. You can override all the automatic settings and fine tune things manually if you want that perfect photo, but to be honest I just keep everything on automatic and the photos are excellent. One issue that worried me about using a 10.1MP camera is the delay between photos because all of the extra processing the camera had to do due to the higher pixels, this was a problem that afflicted my previous digital camera. But my concerns were misplaced, the camera is very fast, enabling photos to be taken in quick succession with the minimum of delays. For a 10.1MP camera I expected slightly better quality photos. Make no mistake the camera takes excellent photos, but I sometimes find, for a 10.1MP camera, the photos sometimes lack a little bit of sharpness and I can't help thinking Olympus have made some compromises here. I also would have liked a viewfinder, the LCD screen is excellent but, for a camera of this price, omitting a viewfinder is a bit mean of Olympus. The silver finish of the camera looks fantastic, from a purely aesthetic point of view this is a very good looking camera. But this also means the camera, though shock proof, is susceptible to scratches. It's also re-assuring to know getting the camera won't get damaged if it gets wet thanks to the water proofing, but I certainly wouldn't risk taking a camera of this price underwater, despite Olympus's claims.Overall, if you're a casual snapper looking for a good quality, all-round camera, then you can't go wrong with the Olympus 1030SW.
Olympus mju 1030SW.. buy something else. (2008-09-23)

I restore classic cars and needed a tough camera for recording my work and taking photos for reference, one that could stand up to the harsh conditions of a hot, dusty workshop. The 1030SW sounded perfect and it was a little more than i wanted to pay but chose it because of it's "tough" claims. On day one without even using the camera it picked up a few scratches...not a problem but a bit surprising for a camera that is supposed to be able to take a bit of abuse. A week later the battery failed..this was replaced by the supplier but a battery should last longer than a week.My biggest problem is the picture quality..it's on parr with a £39.99 camera. I have tried every setting and the pictures are grainey, have no depth and the colour contrast is appauling. I have started to use a 5 year old, cheap when new, digital camera as the picture quality is better.Mine is going back to the supplier for a refund.
Loved it at first, until it went wrong (2008-09-12)

I bought this camera to take on honeymoon to the Maldives, and at first was totally blown away by it, the number of different functions it has (different light settings etc) are great for holiday photos, and we got some brilliant underwater shots. After 10 days though I started getting error messages saying that there was water in the card slot, and that the cover wasn't closed, although it was. About 3 hours later the camera died totally, despite having only been used to depths of about 1 metre while snorkelling.I have returned it for repair, but the company I bought it from (Simply Electronics) have now had it for 2 months so I have no idea if it is just a faulty model or isn't fit for purpose. I'd like another one, but buy from a good retailer incase you have a problem... (and definitely avoid Simply Electronics - shocking customer service).
MOVIE MODE: IMPORTANT INFORMATION (2008-09-12)

I just recieved mine the other day and so far it feels like great little bit of kit. But i think thier is one thing that people need to bear in mind that i didnt realise till after i recieved the camera. The hi Quality 30 fps movie mode (which is one of the feature i plan to use alot) Is limited to 10 sec rec time UNLESS you update the firmware to ver 1.1 AND you have to use a Type M+ XD card, if like me, you didnt realise this and bought a standerd Type M XD card (or indeed any of the Micro SD cards) your out of luck. everything else works fine but no Hi Quality movie fun for you. Im now haveing to go through the hassle of returning the card i bought so i can replace it with a Type M+. Its a bit of a poor show on Olympuses part, all it would have taken was a little disclaimer in the advertising material. Come on guys is that too much to ask?Other than that i still think this a great little camera.
It would be great if it worked (2008-09-04)

The first one I bought back in April for my daughters 18th. However, it went straight back as all pictures displayed the same mark. The replacement was sent straight away and seemed fine until it was taken to the beach where after a dip in the water it packed up.This was particularily annoying as we were due on holiday a week later to go snorkeling. So we bought another one. It was fantastic for three days then filled up with water. Thus I am sending two faulty cameras back as we speak. Then to cap it all a friend who had also bought one told us that after three days of snorkeling his filed up with water. So either we are very unlucky (4 out of 4 ) failing or frankly this product just isn`t fit for purpose. Shame, because when it works it is great and just what we want.Olympus please build one that does what it says and I will happily have one.
