Amazon.co.uk Review

Ignore the fact that ITV, bizarrely, decided to meddle with its UK transmission of Pushing Daisies by lopping out an entire episode. Instead, consider giving this box set a chance, which brings together every episode--fully in tact!--of one of the most interesting new shows to come out of the States.

The concept behind Pushing Daisies is quite simple, but unsurprisingly, it doesn’t take long before it gets more complicated. It follows Ned, a young man who discovers he can bring the dead back to life for a short period of time. Inevitably, he starts using his gift on humans, solving crime as he goes along. Yet things get far more troubled when he then brings the love of his life back from beyond the grave.

In lesser hands, Pushing Daisies could so easily have gone wrong. But in the mits of Bryan Fuller, the man who previously gave us the terrific Dead Like Me, it really does work. The concept gels exceptionally well--thanks also to a cast led by Lee Pace and Anna Friel--and it’s an unpredictable programme that you simply can’t help but enjoy. On the downside, this maiden series is just nine episodes long, and that’s a pity, but a promised second series--off the back of this first run--is a very welcome prospect. --Jon Foster

DVD Description

Bryan Fuller (the creator of Wonderfalls and Dead Like Me) is back with original and quirky Pushing Daisies. This forensic fairytale follows Ned (Lee Pace, Wonderfalls), a young man with a very special gift. As a boy, Ned discovered that he could return the dead briefly back to life with just one touch. Now a pie maker, Ned puts his ability to good use, not only touching dead fruit and making it ripe with everlasting flavour, but working with a private investigator to crack murder cases by raising the dead and getting them to name their killers. But the tale gets complicated when Ned brings his childhood sweetheart (Anna Friel, Goal), Chuck, back from the dead -- and keeps her alive. Chuck becomes the third partner in Ned and Emerson's private-investigation enterprise, encouraging them to use Ned's skills for good, not just for profit. Life would be perfect for Ned and Chuck, except for one cruel twist: if he ever touches her again, she'll go back to being dead, this time for good.

Synopsis

From a young age, Ned demonstrated a remarkable ability for raising the dead with a single touch. The only drawback to this seemingly miraculous gift is that a second touch from him would render them permanently dead. When a private investigator spots Ned's peculiar talent, he enlists him to help solve murder cases by reviving the victims just long enough for them to indentify their killer. An ingenious plan, you might think. But what happens when one of the deceased is your childhood sweetheart and you are faced with the ultimate moral dilemma: let the victim rest in peace after they've given evidence, or keep them alive indefinitely in the name of love?
Series creator Bryan Fuller (DEAD LIKE ME) indulges his taste for the macabre in a comic fantasy that not only challenges our own sense of mortality, but makes us laugh in doing so. With its hyper-real visuals, PUSHING DAISIES bears a striking resemblance to films like BIG FISH, AMELIE, and EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, though in this case, the bright, saturated colours and exaggerated camera angles belie the show's dark humour. This release contains every episode from the debut series.

Imaginative and quirky (2008-08-13)

Everything about this works so well. The scenery is a cross between cartoon, theatre and dreamy, and the stories belong in there. The characters are individual and amusing, and the cast are obviously having a good time with the script and their roles, and for the nine episodes of season one there isn't a bad one. The down side to this dvd set is there's no extras, which is a shame. I would like to see the cast talk about it or the people behind the scenes who dream it all up but I haven't knocked a star off because of that. The series is original, fresh and welcoming each time I've sat down to an episode.

pushing daisies is an american tv series. This is a dvd release of the first season, which ran for a mere nine episodes due to writers strike of the time curtailing it's chances of being longer.the show is about ned sparks, a man with an unusual gift. if he touches a dead thing, it comes back to life. but if it lives again for more than one minute, something else must die in the meantime. ned like pies. and runs a restaurant called the pie hole, where he makes and serves them. seemingly the only other member of staff there is olive snook, a short lady who works as a waitress and has a crush on her boss. which he hasn't noticed.ned uses his ability in partnership with emerson cod, a money loving private detective. he will bring murder victims back to life for a moment, so they can tell him who killed them. if he touches a dead thing before the minute is up then they die again. this way they can collect the rewards for capturing the killers, and nobody else has to die in the meantime.ned has a dog called digby. which was the first dead thing he revived when he discovered his talent. digby has been around ever since and thus ned can't touch him. his world is changed when his childhood sweetheart, a girl called chuck, turns out to be the latest murder victim. he can't bring himself to not let her live again. and thus she joins them in life at the pie hole and solving crimes. ned and chuck are clearly mad about each other but can't take that any further, because they can't touch.and that sets the scene for this most unusual and radically different of tv shows. this is because it's incredibly stylised, all shots being brightly coloured and carefully staged. an amazingly whimsical show, narrated by jim dale in a whimsical style, it meditates on life and love and the big questions in addition to providing the ongoing story arc of the relationships between the main characters and the mystery of the week. it has been likened to the work of film director tim burton, and that is an excellent analogy. you will either fall head over heels for this show and find it charming, or it may be too whimsical and different for your tastes. but if nothing else, it's certainly worth a look.the dvd contains the nine episodes of season one, spread over three discs. each disc offers you the chance to turn off the recap at the beginning of each episode should you so desire. There is no direct scene access. the only language track is in english. and there are subtitles in english and dutch.also note that if you saw the show when it was recently broadcast by the terrestial station ITV one, they missed out the second episode for reasons that all rather academic now, so this is your chance to see it should you have not managed to catch up with it since

A lovely, innovative, romance/detective series. I really enjoyed watching the series and the decadent artwork and graphics used. A shame it's only 9 episodes and quite expensive for the same reason.
Wonderful fantasy whodunnit show (2008-07-07)

I think this show is a must for everyone. The quick-fire scripts help to quickly establish the quartet of lead characters who develop wonderfully as the show progresses. The narration by Carry On star Jim Dale steals the limelight just a fraction every episode. The mixture of comedy, mystery, fantasy and drama is just right - Gordon Ramsay couldn't come up with a better recipe
Finger-licking good television (2008-07-01)

All the best catch phrases have already been spoken for in the critics' appraisal of this original new series, the best of which had to be the description of the show as a surreal but inspirational blend of Tim Burton and the Tellytubbies. And without getting too carried away with an abundance of adjectives myself...it's undeniable that 'Pushing Daisies' is an awesomely lightweight guilty-pleasure for viewers of all age groups and walks of life! This mass appeal is perhaps why the show has attained a level of acclaim that was sadly denied the creator's previous series. As a fan of creator Brian Fuller's `Dead Like Me' and `Wonderfalls' needless to say I had high hopes for his latest project and thankfully `Pushing Daisies' proves to be the wittiest and most charming, if not the deepest vehicle for his unique ideas on imagined afterlife antics. The two best ingredients of his previous projects i.e. narration and death have been preserved for this new medium of his expression, but I disagree with other reviewers who have made strong comparisons with the aforementioned shows. While the dialogue is similarly razor-sharp, it's delivered quite harmlessly, lacking the acerbic bite provided by the female protagonists of those other shows and while the content is reassuringly warm and the feel-good factor with each episode is undeniably high, the end result is almost soap opera in its forgettable-factor.I say almost however, because the episodes are like pure gold, written with such expertise in story-telling and startling symmetry that in the final weaving together of all the numerous plot threads of each episode the viewer is left near breathless by the end. `Dummy', `Pigeon' and `Smell of Success' would be my personal highlights of this nine-episode introductory season and the creatively named characters of Olive Snook and Emerson Cod are my favourites in the show- Ned and Chuck are like limp squids in comparison, but nonetheless endearing. Although the final episode `Corpsicle' feels mostly like a regular episode it provides a pleasing cliffhanger that will have most viewers reeling in anticipation of the second finger-licking installment...
