I didn't realise how much I'd missed this (2008-06-22) I know I harp on about having my record collection stolen years ago, and it has taken me a long, long, time to replace most of it on CD. This was brilliant, I kept trying to find it and eventually it got re-released. Brillian album, can't fault it - I'm not a purist so I can't comment on the recording quality, all I can say is this is one of the best albums of its time. I had it on in my car and didn't want to get out until I had listened to it all.
The second album but never second-rate (2008-04-07) The debut Visage album took a lot of beating in terms of the quality of the songwriting, musicianship (even John McGeoch who regarded it as "a joke") and production. The Anvil is two steps further on.The Damned Don't Cry is one of the finest songs Visage ever wrote: there's just something about Strange's rather wistful vocal and the tight melodic hooks. What else stands out? The Horseman, Midge Ure's strident guitar cutting across the whole thing to compelling effect. Check out Wild Life and the closing track Whispers too - the girls whispering "Wake up...." is just brilliant.Visage were never this strong again. Ure left after the infamous camel fiasco, Night Train was remixed by "some US guy" (Luongo) and Ure asked for his name to be taken off the credits. Visage as a studio project were rarely in the same place together to write, rehearse and record and Ure and Billy Currie needed to concentrate more on Ultravox who had seen huge success after Vienna hit big internationally. If you only ever buy three Visage albums, buy Visage, The Anvil and the best of (or even the Singles Collection if you can find it!) as they represent Visage at the height of their powers. As for Beat Boy, don't get me started!!!
don't buy this for the bonus tracks (2008-04-02) Of course, Nothing to add to the positive review of "the Anvil" as an album of his time. I only want to warn people who may already have the US CD Release from 97 that the added bonus tracks "Motivation", "Damned don't cry (dance mix)" and "I'm still searching" and possibily "Mind of a Toy (Dance Mix)"are all mastered from vinyl, so unless you don't already have a preview CD release of this album, forget it....
Great, but not that great (2008-03-14) It was so nice to see this being re-released at last. Though why oh why did they have to put unrelated bonus tracks with it when there are a plethora of related ones to choose from. Cherry Pop should take a leaf out of Edsel/Demon's book. Having seen and heard the Thompson Twins reissues that THAT record label have released, I'm sure that other record buyers would want their reissue ideas put on this (and hopefully the original Visage) album.
Electro Beat Heaven (2008-03-10) Forget the new romantic image Visage were tagged with. Just listen to this glorious slab of vintage 80's electro beat tunes. Many of the musicians on this album were part of Ultravox and Magazine. Rusty Egan had been a drummer with The Rich Kids and even Steve Strange had fronted a punk band. Of it's time but a great listen. A word of warning though. Rumour has it that this edition is not a true remaster but just a 'needle drop' version. Let's hope we're not disappointed.
