superb (2008-09-03) picked up this album based on a review in international dj magazine. played it once then again and again, gave it to friends who appear to have done the same. considering how formulaic certain electro house can be this is such a refreshing album, so at times it does sound like someone is fighting an atari machine, but there are some superb tracks on here... have a listen, I loved it.
Crystal Castles are the dog's 'nads! (2008-08-21) Seriously, can't rate this highly enough. It's just not like anything else I've heard for years. Young, noisy, angry stuff; and very very musical. Just great. Buy it. If you don't like it, you're wrong.
What a lot of over-rated tripe. (2008-05-29) There's been a lot of hype surrounding Crystal Castles and having listened to the album I have absolutely no idea why.Quite frankly, you've got to be an elitist music lover with an eye for smart argument to present CC as "genius".Personally, I felt there were glimpses of a band who really could push boundaries but right now have their head in their ass. The album is not well rounded enough or interesting enough for me to like it.Too experimental and not enough of a complete album to be anywhere close to what I would like.
Walls Come Tumbling Down... (2008-05-21) Think what used to be indie is a just a procession of careerists in the latest Topman threads?,tired out with old cult bands becoming franchises?.Find yourself really, just really BORED with the state of music?..thank Crunchie for Crystal Castles... Crystal Castles are both sexy and sexless, brittle and yet capable of totally submerging you in an avelance of sound waves.Forget about selling your Master System on ebay 'cos they've attached a sampler to it and recorded it being flushed down the toilet whilst in the background tapes are chewed and spewed on high-speed dub Lyrics-so banal in today's musical climate anyway-are fractured, discordant stabs shorn of the toytown machisimo that is seemingly industry standard, and occupy a space often in the back of your head. Make no mistakes, this is a truly sonic adventure. So open to criticism in its sheer open endedness yet so unlikely to appear on ANY phone advert anytime soon, I doubt the pack will lap this up.When played in the record shop I work in, this and the latest Fall album enabled us to close a half hour early as we'd emptied the place..I guess the shape and sound of the future is hard to swallow when we bathe ceaselessly in the stagnant waters of the past.
yawn yawn yawn (2008-05-14) i can imagine crystal castles being pretty intense live, sadly thats something this album isnt, the ambient moments sound a lot like tracks from the "i care because you do" album by aphex twin.the screamy vocals work rather well, nowhere near as annoying as justice, tho if you like justice then you will probs like this album, as i said its not a bad album, its just not very good, falling very flat.the highlight of the album is their remix of crimewave by health and i think that sums the album up pretty well, their own tunes are dull and even with the volume up are background tunes, the one tune you will remember is crimewave and its by another band.as i say i am sure that live this band are worthy of the hype they have gathered but this album isnt, if you are looking for a fresh, innovative new album to buy, this isnt one of them.
